On October 24,
2006 Leduc County Council amended the
open
burning bylaw with respect to open burning of combustible
materials in residential subdivisions with lots less than five acres
and in hamlets. The amended bylaw states that outdoor fires
shall not be permitted in
the above areas unless they meet the following criteria:
-
the fire is
an attended outdoor camp fire set only for the purposes of
cooking or warmth;
-
the fire is
totally confined within a non-combustible structure or container
that has a draft and smoke vents covered with heavy gauge metal
screen having a mesh size no larger than 13 mm and which is
ventilated in such a manner as to preclude the escape of
combustible materials;
-
the fire is
a smudge fire confined within a non-combustible structure or
container that is set on land of one acre or more in area, for
the purpose of protecting livestock from insects or for
protecting garden plants from frost;
-
the fire has
been set by the Fire department for the purpose of training
firefighters;
-
the fire has
otherwise been authorized by the department.
Leduc County has
several residential subdivisions and seven hamlets (Buford, Kavanagh,
Looma, Nisku, Rollyview, Sunnybrook and Telfordville), which will be
affected by this change.
Fire Guardians
Please note
that Fire Guardians are volunteer positions, and it may not always
be possible to respond immediately to a request for a fire permit.
Applicants should try to provide as much advance notice as possible
to a Fire Guardian.
