It's About More Than Cattle
BSE Study
We are recruiting adult farmers and ranchers
(aged 18 years and older) who are willing to participate in a
long-term study of the health impacts of BSE on the health of
themselves, their families and communities.

The ongoing activity of the Agricultural Services Department is to
encourage, through information and program support; production,
profitability and sustainability of the agriculture industry in Leduc
County. The Agricultural Services staff members are very versatile
and are utilized in all areas throughout the year, including referral
functions for other government agencies and field support, as required,
for Alberta Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. The
Agricultural Services Department has six main functions:
1.
WEED CONTROL
The mandatory enforcement of the Province
of Alberta Weed Control Act is performed by three, government of Alberta
professional certified, seasonally employed, Weed Inspectors, the
Director of Agricultural Services,
Supervisor of Agricultural Services, Agricultural
Foreman. The main function of the Inspectors is to
eliminate the spread of restricted weeds and reduce the spread of noxious weeds.

2. PEST CONTROL
Leduc County Pest Control Officer enforces the Provincial
Pest Control Act, as well as offering assistance with the control of
coyotes and beavers on private property. The officer uses traps, snares, poison, firearms and dynamite, as
necessary, to control problem wildlife (mainly coyotes and beavers).
3. HORTICULTURE
Our Horticulturist is available to give
advice on the cultivation of trees, fruits, flowers, vegetables and general
landscaping. Insects, diseases and weeds are identified and recommendations are
given for their control.
Development and presentation of information workshops on
topics such as pruning, landscape design, shelterbelt planning and
maintenance, are hosted annually.
On-site farm inspections are made, when necessary, to
diagnose insect and disease problems or for landscaping and yard design recommendations.
4. WATER
MANAGEMENT
Leduc County Water Management
Committee in consultations with Alberta -
Natural Resources Service, review concerns in an attempt to rectify drainage
issues on agricultural lands or private property.
5. SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
Through participation with the Provincial Alberta
ly Sustainable Agriculture (AESA) program, Leduc County keeps farmers
informed about the advantages of conservation tillage techniques; Precision Farming with
Global Positioning System (GPS); field shelterbelts; forage management; watering systems for
livestock; and other /sustainable farming practices.
6. SOIL CONSERVATION
Leduc County completes a roadside seeding program which
reduces erosion on newly constructed road right-of-ways and disturbed areas.
